Growing and care instructions

Plumeria - Frangipani
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Tropical America, West Indies
Multiplication: Sowing/sowing/cutting/grafting
Sowing time: all year round
Sowing depth: Insert approx. 1 cm diagonally into the substrate and leave the wings uncovered.
Sowing substrate: Cactus soil, coco peat or cultivated soil + 2/3 sand or perlite
Sowing alternative:

  1. In a germ bag with a damp kitchen roll > until germination occurs.
  2. Mix seeds with substrate in the germination bag and place in a warm place,
    rotate the bag daily
    Sowing temperature: approx. 22-25°C
Sowing location: clear + keep slightly moist, not wet.
    Germination time: approx. 1-3 weeks.
  3. Put the seeds in the foam and let them float in a bowl of lukewarm water. Refresh daily with clean water. After about 3 days the first seeds will germinate.

Watering: during the growing season normal water + always let it dry a little between watering sessions.
Fertilization: Use weekly 0.2% phosphate fertilizer or slow release fertilizer. 20/20/20 and 10/52/10 are the most important.
Pests: spider mites > especially under glass.
Substrate: cactus or standard soil + 2/3 perlite
Sleep mode: Leaves fall off from about October, this is normal.
Otherwise, when the plants are moved to their winter home, the substrate must be properly dried, because too much moisture over a longer period of time causes the plant to rot, and the stems bend forward.
Keep the plants foliage empty and bright in winter at approx. 15ºC and as dry as possible, i.e. it will only be watered sporadically, in small quantities and at larger intervals, but never let the roots of the Plumeria's dry out completely. Do not use large pots, because the more substrate it contains, the longer the soil will stay wet.

Only when the new shoots emerge and the first leaves develop, can the irrigation be slowly increased again. Depending on the course of spring and the condition of the location e.g. winter garden, this can already be done in March.

Please note:
For flower formation it is important that an absolute dormancy period is observed from November to about the end of April. Plumerias do not like oversized pots and should be repotted only every 2-5 years.

In seedlings , the color and shape of the flowers are not always identical to those of mother plants. It is quite possible that the new flowers have a slightly different color spectrum. In this way, new varieties are born again! 🙂
